It was once said that one picture is worth a thousand
words . If this is so, then we have done a lot of talking
in this editior. of the PHALANX. We have tried to capture
that which is nearly impossible- to convey the feelings
and moods that have gone into making the year what it
was.
Just what kind of a year was it for you as an individual?
Was it a year of fulfi llment- or disappointment?
We can tell you what it was like for you as a group.
It was football, dances, the day the snow came, the cold
days waiting for your bus at the bus stop, the coming of
spring, basketball, concerts, track, and the "hundreds of
daily occurrences that made the year as a whole.
With these things in mind, you w ill turn the pages that
we now offer for your consideration, and each picture will
bring to mind a specific mood or feeling that no one
else can possibly feel. We hope that these moods will be
happy ones, and that you will look back on your year
at North Springs- no matter if it was a beginning or an
end - with pleasure.

Miss Elizabeth Pace
Very rarely is anyone able to know a person like Miss Pace. She
is one of those truly dedicated teachers-dedicated to herself and
to her students. Whether teaching the fundamentals of grammar
or the meaning of a poem, she is always moved by a spirit behind
her work, a spirit that never fails to express itself in all that she
does.
She feels strongly about the values of an education. If she
could have her way, she would want all her students to understand
the reason behind their learning. It is this true concern for her
students that makes her such a good teacher.
But along with Miss Pace, the teacher, there is Miss Pace, the annual advisor, and Miss Pace, the Senior Class sponsor. She finds
time among the long hours of grading papers and criticizing themes
to express her creative abilities as the Phalanx advisor. She has
spent many hours at school helping the staff meet deadlines.
For three years she has been, either officially or unofficially, the
class sponsor for the present seniors. She seems to understand
the seniors as people and not as an uncontrollable group. And for
this enormous job there is no thanks given-except this once.
It is to this wonderfully unique person-YOU, Miss Pace-that
we dedicate our yearbook ...

The Faculty Gives Its
The faculty at North Springs High School is characterized by variety in age, background, ideas, and
interests, and by a willingness to share individual abilities with fellow teachers and students. Some of
the faculty guide students in their various activities w ith the knowledge that comes from many years of
teaching, while others, who are recent graduates of college, bring knowledge of new academic concepts
and practices. Many of the teachers have studied in such places as Lebanon, Norway, Mexico, Spain, France,
and Germany; these teachers contribute knowledge gained from experience with other peoples.
In a school comprised of students from all over the North American continent, the variety of places
from which the faculty have come is an asset. The faculty represents places as near as Atlanta itself and
as far away as Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Texas. This diversity of backgrounds helps to create a cosmopolitan atmosphere in all activities and helps students arriving from other parts of the nation to feel
at home.
Variety is a result, also, of differing educational backgrounds among the faculty. All faculty members
hold bachelor's degrees and approximately one-third of the nineteen men and thirty-one women have
received master's degrees. Several also hold six-year certificates. Dr. Felder, the head counselor, has
recently received his Doctor of Education degree, adding another honor to the list of honors held by the
faculty. Many teachers belong to honorary societies such as Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Delta Epsilon. Mr.
Tuszynski has been honored with the title "Outstanding Science Teacher in Georgia".
The talents, training and experiences of the faculty are generously offered to the student body at
North Springs High School. Knowledge of and interest in music, literature, science, language, mathematics,
home economics, industrial arts, business practices, and sports of all varieties are contributed to acquaint
the students with diversity and to aid in their development and understanding.

The creation of the school newspaper, The
Oracle, was accomplished this year with the
advice and guidance of Mrs. Stevens. Members
of the Journalism class organized themselves into
various groups in order to collect school and
community news and present it in printed form.
Eight issues containing news about sports, school
government, dramatic presentations, and choral
department achievements, among others, were
circulated among the student body over the year.
The staff ran regular columns honoring students
and teachers who were considered outstanding;
there were articles dealing with school spirit; and
there were discussions of current literature. The
Oracle staff, headed by Vera Tanner, covered
every phase of school life and worked hard to
present the news effectively.

Student Council Serves School
Mid-term Dance
Members of the Student Council under the direction of
Mrs. Lynn Greer have provided the students with a variety
of services and entertainment during the year. Treasurer
Larry Smith organized and directed a pep-rally bonfire during
the football season, while homeroom representatives Betty
Carnes and Mark Muecke, among others, encouraged school
spirit through the sale of pom-poms and pep buttons during
the basketball season. Group effort was involved in the
planning of both the Council's clean-up campaign and the
dance held after mid-term exams. Several members have
devoted t1me and effort to the development of a handbook
for North Springs students. The Council's work has reflected
a desire to promote school spirit, orderly direction of school
activities, and good citizenship.

The National Beta Club · of North Springs re!eived its
charter in the spring of 1965. The purpose of the club is
to promote sound scholarship and encourage leadership
not only within the members but among all students
of North Springs. Annually a service project is undertaken
to benefit the general welfare of the school or the community. Representatives are selected each year to attend
the National Beta Club Convention. The Beta Club members
strive to promote good citizenship and set an example

Drama Club
Under the guidance of Miss Nancy Banfield and the
leadership of President Stefanie Ney, the Drama Club
had a successful year in 1965-1966. Their second annual
Variety Show was a tremendous hit, and their productions
of the plays, Thurber Carnival and Arsenic and Old Lace,
were extremely entertaining.
Approximately seventy members of the club helped to
create the circus atmosphere of the Variety Show in
November by performing on-stage or in the background .
Further knowledge of the techniques of dramatic presentation was acquired by staging a Thurber Carnival for the
P.T.A. in February and Arsenic and Old Lace for the school
community in April.

Under the direction of Mrs. Judi Thornton, the choral department of North Springs High School has
received recognition in many ways. The Chanteuses, the advanced girl's chorus, were selected from among
other choruses in the Atlanta area to sing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Guild of
Atlanta in the opera The Death of the Bishop of Brindisi. Last year, the Chanteuses received a superior rating
at the Fifth District Choral Festival at O'Keefe High School. They were invited to sing in a concert this spring
at Cross Keys High School.
The Beginning Girl's Chorus is working diligently to achieve the success of the Chanteuses. These two
groups sang at the Christmas concert at Lenox Square, and a few members were able to join the advanced
chorus in the opera. They attended Fifth District Festival for the first time this year.
Another performing group, the Spartan Choir, is becoming well-known for its concerts at school. This
year the spring concert was entirely folk music which interested students as well as adults.

Springs High School Drill Team who
worked very hard to provide entertainment during half-time activities. This year's
members were chosen in August when
tryouts were held, and four officers were
selected to organize the team.
The high school band accompanied the
marching Dorians with a variety of musical selections, while various members of
the Drill Team made up the routines.

Football Opens
Football is an immensely exciting, and, at the
same time, taxing sport. For the spectator, it adds to
those crisp, cold autumn evenings a special thrillthe thrill of watching competition, action, contact, and
other sensations that well up within a spectator as
a back tries to make it around the end on a sweep.
It brings out a certain amount of involvement, both
in the individual player with the ball, and with a
team as a whole. It demands the spectator's complete
attention and takes his mind off his problems.
For the player, football is a satisfying way of staying
in shape. He enjoys the fierce satisfaction of a perfectly
laid block, of a hard tackle, or of a long pass. It
demands df him every ounce of strength and courage
he can muster up. When he is tired, he looks within
himself and summons up that extra bit that makes
him a competitor and champion.
To many at our school, football is North Springs,
and North Springs is football. For three years they
have been coming out every Friday night to see the
Spartans compete with yet another school.
70
Athletic Season
"Amazing," they say, "how a team, especially a
team starting from scratch, can achieve so much in
so little time. They sure must have had a lot of
luck."
True, they were fortunate, but more than that,
they had the spirit necessary to build a champion.
This season was no less victorious than the others,
even though the team lost two games. They tasted
defeat early with a loss to Towers, 6-0, but came
fighting back the next week to overpower McEachern,
45-0. This is indicative of the team pride that earn~d
the team a name in the sports world. They defeated
Stone Mountain, 59-0, in a game that must be recognized as one of their finest. And at the close of the
season, they defeated North Cobb, 42-12, in the
final game for the seniors.
Winter's cold blast has dulled the memory of such
stars as Percy Helmer, and spring practice has revealed new names to replace the old. But when the
season opens next year, mixed with the excitement
and spirit of the competition will be that slight trace
of remembrance that the seasons will not change. And
the spirited spectator will look back on the team that
built a name from nothing.

Our 8-team players, only a year or two away
from becoming varsity athletes , had quite a
satisfying year. Although they won only four
games, against four losses, they played good
tough football. Leading the team was quarterback
Toby Summerour, who directed the team off the
field as well as on. Other outstanding players
were Rick Letourneau, fullback, and Mike Wright,
tackle and center.
Coach Berg, new at our school , led the best
group of eighth graders we have had to an
undefeated , untied season. Tommy Farrar and
Jim Gregory led this almost unbel ievable team
to the great he ights it has attained.
Although much of the glory must go to the
varsity team, we should recognize that these boys
will soon be our representatives in all varsity
competition.
They will soon find themselves at the top of
the ladder- varsity athletics-the best in the school.
It will be up to them to carry on the Spartan
name.

The 1965 North Springs Cross-Country
team captured honors by ga ining North
Springs first regional title on the 2AA
Region Meet in November, 1965. The
team achieved an overall season record
of eight victories and one loss. The meet
with rival Sandy Springs proved to be a
highlight of the season when the North
Springs runners became victorious by a
narrow margin of points. Every Spartan
was closely followed by a Panther but the
North Springs team came through with a
winning score of 26-29.
Another high point was the fourth
place earned by the team in the AA
State Meet. This achievement was the
result of spirited team effort and outstanding performances by Bill McChesney
and Eddie Collins who finished second
and third, respectively. The Spartan
striders' greatest accomplishment came,
however, when the team captured the
2AA Region Trophy. Again, Eddie Collins,
with a third place, and Bill McChesney,
with a fourth place win, sparked the
team to a first place victory.

Basketball Brings
Coach McBee guides his Spartans to victory.
With football coming to a close on a cool fall
evening, attention was turned indoors to basketball. Throughout the winter, this game provided
the spectator with its own particular brand of
excitement.
Reflecting back on it, the spirited follower of
the game can remember the thrill of victory and
the discouragement of defeat- the tension that
revolved around a jump ball- the gripping anticipation as the team brought the ball down court,
knowing the game could be decided with the
next shot. And when that next shot came, the
spectator remembers that agonizing second while
the ball was in the air and the satisfaction that
came as the ball cleared the net.
Two more points for North Springs.
This season saw a great improvement in a
team that was already good. No longer a team
that could pass the season off on inexperience,
the Spartans battled the best of them to the
wire. Perhaps their finest hour came when they
beat arch-rival Sandy Springs, 60-57, on December
1Oth. Then there was the time the team battled
back from a twenty point deficit only to lose
to Russell by three points- and that heart-breaking
sub-region game with Hapeville that they lost
by two points.
It was truly a great team, this one of 1965-66,
and they will long be remembered for ' their
determination and spirit. And with the team will
be remembered the three senior players-Hawkins,Waltemath, and Chandler- whose leadership
constituted the nucleus of the team.
Next year, there will be three new faces to
replace the old. The eyes will once again turn
from the gridiron to the court-the spectators will
be there, the excitement will be there, and the
team will be there, carrying on the tradition that
can't die.

Basketball, the only major sport in which
girls at North Springs participate, has brought
the spectator many thrilling moments this
year. The team's record was greatly improved
over last year; this was due in part to an
excellent coaching job by Mrs. Queen, and
in part to excellent performances by the
players.
One of the brightest stars has been Ellie
Jones . Last year she was on the eighth grade
team, but moved right up to a starting position
on the varsity this year. She was one of the
high scorers for the year. Another star was
Frances Stevenson, a transfer student from
Dykes who helped boost the Spartans on
numerous occasions. Then, of course, there
was Barb Hubeny- a veteran star of three
years.
Over all, it was a great team effort that
produced the winning season for the girls.
And there will be more success next year,
since there is only one senior-Sue Wardwf1o will be graduating this year.

Wrestlers Win Region 'l.-AA Championship
With the hard work of Coach Henderson, our
boys were able to achieve great heights. Coach
Henderson deserves a great deal of credit for his
patience, understanding and faith, and his constant
encouragement.
Team work is an important factor in any sport, and
wrestling is no exception. But it is also a sport for
the individual. As individuals, our wrestlers have
improved l 00%. This was reflected by a season of
8 wins and 2 losses.
As the team went on to greater victory, it placed
first in the region and contributed a beautiful trophy

Baseball Enjoys a
The North Springs baseball Spartans in their
first year of varsity competition in 1965,
proved that inexperience does not always
breed incapability. Dominated by youth, the
Spartans were expected to be little match
for the established region powers of 2-AA,
but, under the guidance of coaches Henderson
and McBee, they jelled into a fine team. It
was amazing how this team of five freshmen,
eight sophomores and only two juniors could
knock off the veteran teams of Milton and
Hapeville in their first encounters of the
season; and, even more amazingly, after their
Wedding digs in for next pitch.
Successful Season
opening flurry had ended, the Spartans' enthusiasm did not die.
Inspiration for such enthusiasm came from
such stars as Rusty Prindle. Rusty was the
leading hitter and ·top pitcher, and was voted
the "Most Valuable Player" by his teammates.
Rusty was a great competitor, and was joined
by many other outstanding players. Larry
Sheppard hit homeruns in victories over Milton and Russell, and Danny Farrar was the
most consistent hitter on the team. Defensively, Chip Pohl, the catcher, and Toby Summerour, at third base, were standouts.
The team starts off the game with a prayer.

Percy Helmer hurdles his way to state.
Track is a unique sport. It is perhaps one of
the oldest form~ of athletic competition and one
of the most demanding. The track season begins
in early March and runs into May, but for the
athlete it is a year-round study in dedication. He
must continue to run in the off-season to stay
in shape. This means running in the heat of sum·
mer and the bitter cold of Winter- just to run,
perhaps, ten races that, put together, would not
equal one of his practice sessions.
Why does he practice so much? Because, while
track is a team sport, it is basically an individual
duel between two or three people each trying to
prove that he is best-and the athlete believes he
is best, or he wouldn't be out there competing.
Our track team took what they had and molded
a good team from it. They took a first at the
Roswell Relays, a tie for first in the DeKalb
Relays, and made good showings at Westminster
and Columbus. But they really came out in the
Region and State meets. They finished with two
sets of state champions and a fifth place in the
state for the team.
They competed with schools on a team basis,
but in the final analysis, it was the dedication
that each member had that made the team.
When they fell behind, they tried harder; when
they fell down, they got up and kept runningthey never gave up.
Wedding blasts from the blocks.
Muecke, Hawkins, and lees sprint their way to victory.

As the fresh snowfall is never the same after being
marked by the first footprint, North Springs will be
different after the Class of 1966 leaves.
Like a snowfall, North Springs High School came
into being in 1963. The class remembers the "trial
and error" period when no one was sure what course
the new school would take. They remember Mrs.
Crouch, and Miss Fauver, and Mrs. O'Quinn- that first
day when they met Mr. Hansard- and when the
entire student body fit on one side of the gym.
They remember the second year more than just
an "in between year" for them. They remember the
new faces that joined the class- the new school wingthe new athletic field. They remember Mrs. Wilson,
Mrs. Speir, Miss Bauldauf, and Mrs. Walker. They
remember a successful athletic year- a winning football team in its first year in varsity competition - eight
"away" games. They remember the Junior Dance
and Senior rings.
They remember the thrill of finally reaching THE
year- the joyous confusion as they planned for graduation-measurements for caps and gowns, orders for
invitations, and many of the other little things that
had to be done as May 20th drew closer.
And among all this hurrying about, perhaps there
was a moment for looking back before moving
forward ...
A new stadium-1965.

Senior officers-1966.
The class w ill be gone, but a part of them will remain
with the school. They have established many of the
things future students will take for granted. They have
written a school constitution- established an annual and
a newspaper as outlets for creative expression-and started
and built various clubs. They have made North Springs
a power to be reckoned with in the sports world and a
school to be admired academically.
As surely as spring follows the snows of winter, another
class will move up to take their place. They will have
plans of their own to fulfill. And there will be more classes
to follow them, bringing with them accomplishments both
large and small but there will never again be a class
like the Class of 1966They were first.

and Klaus
Makes His Mark
Klaus participates in many activities at North Springs.
Our first exchange student, Klaus Wedel, is a
familiar face around North Springs. Participating
in the American Field Service program, Klaus is
from Bochum, West Germany. The A.F.S. is an
organization that was established duri11g World
War II to create understanding and friendship
among nations. Because of this organization, students from Europe and South America have been
able to take part in exchange programs with
American students.
Klaus is a distinguished member of the Senior
class. He participated in many extracurricular activities at North Springs. As a member of the
first soccer team, he helped bring on a successful
season fer them. He sang in the Spartan Choir.
Klaus also helped to organize and stimulate interest in a German club and participated 1n th;s
year's Variety Show.
He is an ardent supporter of North Springs
athletic events, having attended many of the
basketball and football games this season. He
even traveled to Orangeburg, S. C. with the
team.
This first year of participation in the A.F.S.
program has proved successful for North Springs
and, hopefully, for Klaus too.

stand out from the crowd. Whether it is because
of their leadership ability, their scholarship, or
their spirit, a few always achieve distinction.

but these are the ones who have truly shown
themselves to be outstanding. It is these fourteen
seniors, chosen from the senior class, whom we
now present as the Outstanding Seniors of the first
graduating class of North Springs High School.

Seasons change before our eyes; events that are as yet unrealized will become
present, and then past, almost before we know it.
In this, the 1966 PHALANX, we have attempted to capture these many fleeting
moments. We hope that when the memories of this year past become fused with
those years to come, this annual will serve to remind you of the people and events
that were part of your year 1966.
·
Among the people we will remember are those who gave their time and effort
to help us make this book possible. We owe our thanks to parents- Mrs. Garrett,
Mr. Hinkle, Mr. Marchant, and Mrs. White- for materials and patience; to the faculty
for tolerance and understanding; to the administration- .Dr. Felder, Mr. Hansard,
Mrs. McDavid, and Mr. T.- for statistics and facilities; to Ed Jones, our advisor from
Taylor Publishing Company; to John Morgan, who has been more than a photographer to us and without whose talent many of the moments would have been
missed; to Mrs. Richards, for all her help; and most especially to our advisor,
Miss Pace, who was the inspiration behind us all.

Fulton County Board of Education Minutes and Records Related to Board Operations
Description
An account of the resource
Originally, the board was comprised of twelve, elected members. They were E.Y. Clarke, Jesse M. Cook, R.B. Hicks, Seaborn Jones, superintendent Jethro W. Manning, E.H. Muse, P.L. Mynatt, William C. Parker, Isaac Steinheimer, Benjamin R. Walker, William A. Wilson and chairman Joseph Winship. In 1872 however, an amendment to the Laws of 1870 required board members to be appointed by county grand juries (instead of elected by militia districts), and the board was reduced to five. In 1984, the law was reversed again, resulting in seven, elected board members, with an appointed superintendent. Since 1986, this has been its structure and organization.
Board records produced in the last decade will not be posted on this web site. See fultonschools.org for recent records.
