For the past five years one man has
stood out among the rest as a leader
at Ridgeview. This man has helped to
make Ridgeview what it is today. He
was here in the beginning and has
always been an important figure in
Ridgeview's growth. Who is the
person that is present at all the
school functions, is actively concerned about students, and is always
interested in making Ridgeview the
best school? Mr. Robert j. Boyd. To
express our sincere appreciation and
gratitude for all he has done for
Ridgeview, the 1973 Viewpoint staff
dedicates this year's book to Mr.
Robert j. Boyd, Principal of Ridgeview High School.

ADMINISTRATION
The room just oppo ite th cafeteria is an amazing place. It is commonly called "the office ." Aft r five years of operation it has been
flooded with mountains of tardie , absentee reports, d tention slips , and
permanent record cards. But de pite this handicap the administration has
remained on top of the mountain and, for at least another five year , will
hold the illustrious titl of " the office. "

LIBRARIANS AND COUNSELORS
Two of the most popular
places at Ridg vi w to frequent
during the chool hours are the
library and the counselors' office . A student going to either of
the e places will certainly receive help and understanding
from the people who man the
controls. In either place it is
possible to discover an entire
new world , by leafing through a
college catalog or a travel book.
So, stop in and pick up a new
world.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
As Ridgeview has grown, so has the Physical Education Department.
It has taught students that P.E. is more than the agony of running laps,
the drudgery of dressing out, and the frustration of losing socks. Physical Education is the enthusiasm of the High Point program, the excitement of playing tennis at "Home," the challenge of the 18-hole
golf cours , and the fun of riding the bus to bowl.

HOMECOMING 1972
78
Much of the planning and
work involved in building the
floats this year was in vain a
the rain came on Octob r 27,
making the motorcade and th e
crowning of the queen
virtually impos ible . It wa
obvious that a great deal of
work went into all the float ,
however the eniors once
again took top honors with
their float entitled , " A World
of Trea ure Found In a Friend ."
Each class seems to have
caught on how to build a float ,
though some tudent are
que tioning whether the co t
and effort involved are
worthwhile. everthele plan
ar already beginning to make
next year' s homecoming
ucce sful.

Although rainy, 1972's
Homecoming was far from
dreary. The Queen, Gayle
Castro, and her court saw
to that. The crowning took
place at the dance due to
the conditions of the field
at the game.
It was probably for the
best, however, since a
"starry wonderland" and
the music of Hampton
Grease Band provided a
better background than
would have a muddy field
and the music of a
foghorn.
81
82
Homecoming involves more
than ju t a football game. The
game and dance are really a
culmination of activities taking
pia throughout homecoming
week. This year's homecoming
involved the ale of FS'
Friend hip link , th decoration of
spirit halls, the sale of balloons,
and, of course, th dance and th
game. The activitie throughout
the week help promote spirit and
provide a pleasant diversion from
th monotony of chool.
83
The 1973 Snow Queen was crowned on
December 20 at the Christmas dance.
The representatives from each class
were : Stephanie Starr- 8th, Stephanie
Guild - 9th , Kathy Jordan -10th , and
Verdery Cunningham- 11th. Out of the
three senior nominees, Sissy Carley,
Betty Kenny, and Libby Lloyd, the
student body cast their penny ballots to
choose Betty as Snow Queen (and give
the Key Club needed funds).
Dancing was one of the most exquisite modes
of personal expression and social enjoyment long
before Ridgeview ever had a dance. Almost all
modern dancing is done to music of some sort,
and Ridgeview gets the sorts. Whatever the music,
or occasion the staunch Ridgeview dance
supporters find a way to get into it and express
themselves.

After all, Ridgeview students need understanding, too.

PACAS, PINOLES
AND PILAR
"Ecuador. That sounds so foreign!" This
thought flashed through the mind of every
Ridgeview student when told from where
the new exchange student would come. But
when Pilar Darquea arrived, the AFS philosophy was proven true once again. People
are people, no matter what race, creed, or
color.
ot an average person, however,
Pilar proved to be very sensitive and
talented. Her outgoing manner made it easy
for the students to get to know her and her
fractured English, far from being a hindrance, often broke the ice with a good
laugh and ended with the promise of help
from a new friend.
Pilar has contributed much to Ridgeview
and when the time comes for her return to
Ecuador, she will leave many sad friends
with the thought, "Ecuador's not so far
away, after all."

VIEWPOINT 1973
Under the leadership of
their new sponsor, Miss
Linda Robbins, the members
of th e 1973 Viewpoint taff
have managed to focus their
talents into a 200 page book
of
memories, otherwise
known as the Viewpoint.
Their talents are wide and
varied. Some include riding
wheelchairs down the Engli h hall at 9 p.m ., springing surprise
birthday
parties on each other, and
arguing over pictures. But as
one passes the yearbook office he might catch a
glimpse of students slaving
over croppers and struggling to create some original
copy.

SCIENCE CLUB
For a newly organized group the
Science Club has surely grown .
Instead of meeting in Ridgeview's
cafeteria , they move their meetings
to Morrison ' s. In between green
beans and strawberry shortcake
members listen to speakers ranging
from Fernbank scientists and
photographers to scuba divers.
Members are also given a choice to
participate in many special interest
sections the club offers. One of the
club ' s greatest contributions to the
school , an aquarium , was purchased
by money earned in last year 's
ancy Creek cleanup. But the great
gift is constantly turning out the
lights in the library and science
wing .

CHORUSES
Have you ever been in the chorus room
prior to an appearance? There is a mad
scramble as Ia t minute preparations are
made :
" Where 's my pillow for the bench?"
" That perfume stinks! "
" All right, who 's gonna work the concession
stand?"
Then with the rustle of yellow dresses, and
the scurry of pants-suited legs, Ridgeview's
mixed and girls ' choruses take their proper
places and present a medley of 3 or 4 part
harmony songs . Their activities include
appearances at annual PTA meetings,
concerts , festivals , shopping centers, and a
special presentation directed by Robert
Shaw and accompanied by the Symphony
Orchestra.

MARCHING BAND
Have you ever tried to march down the football field
blowing a sou aphone or trumphet or beating a ba e

the Ridgeview Marching Band. The problem comes
when you no longer march in a straight line but have to
form circles and eros e instead . But wh nth final
touche are added and the half-time how begin all
worries and aches disappear. The only problem
remaining is to put on a better show that anyone else .
And the Ridgeview Marching Band ha accompli hed

IN MEMORY
DANIEL J. SMITH
Throughout the nation, flags were flown at half-ma t
mourning the death of a former president. However, at Ridgeview, the· lowered flag was commemorating another great
man, Dan Smith. Serving as Ridgeview' band director for the
past four year , Mr. Smith played a vital role in the lives of
both tudents and faculty. A great sense of lo is felt by both
those who knew him and those who knew of him.
